LOWER DUTCH GARDEN OF GATCHINA PALACE PARK. HISTORY OF CREATION
Polyakova A.Yu.

Abstract. In the 18th century the large manor parks of Russia and Europe consisted of a landscape part and ceremonial gardens, set nearby the main building of the manor complex. The ceremonial gardens served as the hallmark of the wealth, status and taste of the owner of the estate. Four large palace parks in Gatchina appeared during the reign of the Grand Duke Pavel Petrovich and were developed during Paul's accession to the throne of the Russian state. This article traces history of the appearance of one of the ceremonial gardens near the palace – Lower Dutch Garden (Nizhniy Gollandskiy). The article presents history of the entry of the garden sculptures, the substitution of plants under different Russian emperors. There is an analysis of planning concepts of different periods on the basis of iconographic materials, including unrealized projects. The article contains archive extracts of plantings in regular gardens at the palace from the creation period to these days. There is a trace of a change in the appearance of the Lower Garden from a flat composition to filling the parterre with bushes of common lilac (Syringa vulgaris L.) under Alexander III. Next is displayed the desolation at the beginning of the 20th century and attempts to revive the front garden, including the project of 1948, which was never implemented, and the restoration works on the project of Ida Erf in 1971-72, which were of a poor quality and not fully completed. Also the here mentioned the attempts by specialists to plant roses, which failed too due to the lack of constant protection of the park. The last 20 years of the museum park's existence have been marked by regular operation and gradual revival of the gardens. Copies of the sculpture have been installed in the parterre of the garden, the originals have been restored and kept in the palace, and for the summer tub cultures are exhibited in the Lower Garden.

Tomus XII.

CATALOGUE OF GREEK ALCHEMICAL MANUSCRIPTS BY M. A. SHANGIN Vinnik M.A., Pushkova A.A.

Abstract. Mstislav Antoninovich Shangin (1896-1942) is a Soviet classic philologist, historian of Bizantium and paleographer, took part in two major international projects – Catalog of Greek astrological manuscripts (Catalogus codicum astrologorum graecorum. Tomus XII. Codices rossicos descripsit Mstislav Antonini F. Šangin) and Catalogue of Greek alchemical manuscripts. The first book was published in Brussels in 1936 and was highly appreciated by the publisher CCAG Fr.Cumont. As for the second Catalog, we know from the correspondence between M. Shangin and V. Vernadsky that in May of 1936 the manuscript was passed to the publishing house of Directorate of the Catalogs of Alchemical Manuscripts of the International Academic Union. This information is confirmed by the letter of Mr. A. Delatte we found in the RAS archive in the Fund of the Institute of Science History and Technology, AS USSR which supervised this edition from the part of the Soviet Union. The further fate of the Catalog is not known. Perhaps, due to the Institute transfer to Moscow in 1936 and with its subsequent liquidation (1938) negotiations were stopped, and the publication never saw the light.
